Agentic AI

There is no universal definition of agentic AI currently, but this blogpost summarizes what I have been able to piece together. 

Generative AI automates the creation of text, images, videos, and other output by "chatting" with an LLM using human language. Agentic AI is different.  In agentic AI, software agents act, pursue goals,  make decisions similar to how a human does, and does not need to be supervised constantly by a human.

In addition to agentic AI agents acting and making decisions; agentic AI agents can provide value by enabling humans to make better decisions.  An agentic AI agent might make better decisions than a human might make (i.e. higher quality) or an agentic AI agent might make similar decision to what a human would make but provide the decision with a dramatic reduction in cost and/or effort (i.e. lower cost). Plus agentic AI agents bring something else to the table: they can work 24 hours a day.

An agentic AI agent is an AI system that can perceive, reason, and act on its own to accomplish a task leveraging a model, following rules, often across multiple steps, and often by using tools, APIs, or other software systems as it performs those tasks. Agentic AI behaves less like a "chatbot" and more like a "digital coworker".


An agentic AI agent is a software agent that does not think; it "does".  It performs a task or tasks in a process, project, or an entire workflow.  

Linked Open Agentic Commerce (LOAC) is an emerging architectural paradigm to enable agents to communicate with other agents and humans to enable online commerce to occur. 

LOAC makes every part of a commercial transaction explicit, discoverable, traceable, computable, and auditable.  Instead of embedding meaning within web pages that are based on HTML, using cookies or APIs; LOAC uses explicit information in the form of linked machine-readable that is purpose built and reliable. There is no guessing or probability involved where it matters.

LOAC requires an explicit representation of the understanding as to who is the principle, who is the agent, what authority has been delegated, what is the scope of that authority,  and how actions are audited. All this is explicitly defined in machine interpretable form using linked data.

This article, The Next Influencers Won’t Sell Attention. They’ll Sell Better Answers, says that a new influencer model will result based on providing understanding to these agentic AI agents.

Agentic AI will turn information into a product, knowledge into a product, and decisions into a product.  New business models will emerge.  LOAC is a way to publish commerce as linked data so AI agents can safely discover, understand, verify, and complete transactions on behalf of humans or on behalf of other software agents. It turns products, licenses, identities, and actions into a navigable knowledge graph of hyperlinks.

While today's LLM/transformer based artificial intelligence brings us "brilliant chatbots"; agentic AI will enable the creation of what amounts to "an operating system for performing work"; humans and agentic AI working together in order to make things better, faster, and cheaper.

Example Financial Statement Holon
