AI-First, Digital-First

An AI‑First or Digital‑First mindset begins with a genuine paradigm shift: you recognize that the landscape has fundamentally changed, and the old map no longer describes the territory. Instead of trying to retrofit yesterday’s operating logic, you adopt an entirely new logic; one built around how cyberspace actually behaves, how digital systems truly operate, and how artificial intelligence creates, transforms, and accelerates value.

A white paper published by the World Economic Forum, The AI-First Operating System: A Blueprint for Operating and Business Model Innovation, suggests an "AI-First" approach.

The paper suggests five building blocks serves as somewhat of a blueprint which captures the fundamentals of how AI-first enterprises are designed and run.  Those five building blocks are: (see page 8 of the document)

  1. Intelligence engine at the core: Enterprises place intelligence at the centre of their operations and business models, turning every interaction into a compounding source of advantage. This accelerates speed, extends scale and expands scope in ways that grow stronger with use.
  2. Adaptive AI technology stack: Organizations build modular, adaptable technology architectures that integrate data, models and workflows while being designed to evolve as the frontier moves.
  3. Operations redesign: Enterprises systematically digitize their workflows with intelligence – not optimizing them at the margins but connecting all of their operations to the intelligence engine.
  4. Human-AI teaming: Roles, teams and organizational structures are designed to enable continuous collaboration between people and AI systems, defining what human contribution looks like at the frontier.
  5. New value creation: Every AI-first organization, regardless of sector, must decide how to position intelligence integration in the market. From AI as a product feature to AI as invisible infrastructure, positioning choice determines what customers pay for, where value accrues and how the business competes.
Accounting & Audit by Design (A&AD) framework embraces AI-First/Digital-First. In fact, the authors of A&AD reconciled A&AD to these five building blocks.

Relating to building block #4, Human-AI teaming.  One particularly good thing provided by the paper is a summary of the spectrum or "levels" of human agency scale (HAS). This graph show those defined levels of automation across team dynamics and degree of human involvement required:

The article mentions several companies that they hold out as examples of AI-First enterprises which include: (not sure I got all of them) Workera, Claryo, Harvey (Frontier Legal Organization), Gamma, Genesys, Cognizant, Rakuten AI, Contextere, ANT Group.

The paper is absolutely worth reading.
